Satun Province
Satun is one of the smallest provinces in Thailand, bordering Malaysia to the south and facing the Andaman Sea to the west. Satun is one of the hidden gems of Southern Thailand; the province possesses renowned picturesque islands with verdant forests and beautiful mountains.
Population
The majority of the population are Thai-Malay Muslims. People of mixed Thai and Malay ancestry are often referred to as Samsam and they form the bulk of Satun's population. Ethnic Malays in Satun are more proficient in Thai as compared to the Malays from the other states, and their dialect have strong affinities to those of the Malaysian state of Perils.
Geography
Most of Satun province is mountainous, with some smaller plains near the Andaman Coast. There are mangroves to be found along the coast.
There are more than 100 islands in Satun province. Some of the more famous ones are Koh Tarutao, Koh Rawi and Koh Petra.
