Kuraburi

Rural Charm

Kuraburi is usually a starting point to the Surin Islands in the Andaman Sea. Kuraburi has much more to offer - local villages are fascinating places to visit to get a glimpse of traditional southern charm - culturally diverse with muslims, buddhists, christians and other faiths living next to each other.

The coast off Khuraburi is hosts three distinctive and highly important marine eco-systems

  1. Mangrove Forest Mangroves protect coastal areas from erosion, storm surge (especially during hurricanes) as well as during tsunamis, as seen in 2004. The mangrove's massive root system is efficient at dissipating wave energy.
  2. Seagrass The seagrass plants are photosynthesize, thus limited to growing submerged in the photic zone, and most occur in shallow and sheltered coastal waters anchored in sand or mud bottoms. They undergo pollination while submerged and complete their entire life cycle underwater.
  3. Coral Reef Reefs are under threat from climate change, ocean acidification, blast fishing, overuse of reef resources, and harmful land-use practices. High nutrient levels such as those found in runoff from agricultural areas can harm reefs by encouraging excess algae growth.

The coastline off Kuraburi is home to some of the largest mangrove forests in Thailand.
