Khao Lak Beach

Khao Lak is a very popular seaside resort just north of its more famous sibling, Phuket. Khao Lak was partly destroyed by the 2004 tsunami. The resorts have been rebuilt - stronger and much better prepared for any future disaster. Khao Lak is also a very popular weekend getaway for locals in Phuket.

Pristine Coastline

The pristine 25+ kilometers coastline is synonymous with beauty. As late as the mid 1990s there were just a few bungalows, surrounded by rubber and palm oil plantatations. Backpackers started arriving and words spread rapidly to Scandinavian markets. Soon the first for stars hotels were built.

It is still a thriving destination for backpackers, but also up-scale tourists. Some of the best hotels in South East Asia has been built the last few years at Khao Lak. Tourism is the main income for the area. Bungalows start at 350-400 baht while five star hotel rooms can easily run up to 1200 dollars a night.

It is also a popular departure point for trips to Similan Islands - famous for its beauty, coral reefs, fish, snorkling and underwater diving.
